In cooperation with Hannover’s municipal fire brigade, Allison Transmission will display the fleet’s latest acquisition at Interschutz 2015 (Hall 27, Stand K38): a Mercedes-Benz Econic 1830 L 4x2 firetruck with HLF 20/16 body from Magirus-Lohr, equipped with an Allison 3000 SeriesTM fully automatic transmission.
Conversion specialist Paul Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH modified the chassis to accommodate an electro- hydraulically steered rear axle with differential lock and drum brakes. The modification resulted in an exceptionally small turning radius of just 13.5 meters. As compared to a standard vehicle turning radius of 16.5 meters, the new Allison-equipped firetruck is highly maneuverable and ideal for dense urban areas with heavy traffic.
Hannover’s municipal fire brigade ordered 16 of these vehicles, seven of which are already in operation, with the remaining nine expected to be delivered by the end of 2015.
Econic HLF 20/16: When space is tight
The HLF 20/16 body combined with the Econic low-entry concept, the Allison fully automatic transmission and the rear steering axle results in a compact and highly maneuverable vehicle. Allison’s patented torque converter allows for precise maneuvering, even at very low speeds, for the best control in critical situations. In addition, Allison Automatics offer a top-mount engine driven Power Take-Off (PTO) provision, for easy integration of additional equipment and maximum performance for the high requirements of fire trucks in mobile and stationary applications.
According to Claus Lange, Hannover’s fire brigade director, HLF-vehicles are widely accepted as the standard in medium and large fire brigades. The HLF 20 is the most common vehicle, ideal for firefighting operations and technical assistance.
‟We have worked with Econic HLF vehicles for 15 years. The low entry structure in combination with the fully automatic transmission is ideal for us. The higher level of safety, impressive acceleration and easy handling are important factors for us. The increased maneuverability due to the additional rear axle steering facilitates our work in the city center and also on numerous highways around Hannover,” Lange said.
Optimally tailored for emergency vehicles
Allison provides the right product for each firefighting and emergency vehicle – whether it’s the 1000 SeriesTM for ambulance, firefighting and command vehicles or the 3000 and 4000 models for special-purpose vehicles, like turntable ladders and cranes or water tenders and airfield crash trucks.
With its Continuous Power TechnologyTM, sophisticated electronic features and easy integration of driveline and engine-driven PTOs, Allison transmissions increase performance, functionality and safety when lives are on the line and every second counts.
